On a Sunny, Hot Day

On a sunny, hot day in mid-August, Vera went out of her cozy apartment where she lived by herself, and got on a local train on a whim. The university student was wearing a white cotton blouse, blue jeans, black sneakers and a new white hat.

The train ran through rice paddies and vegetable fields, and she got off at the fifth station whose name means "Fortress" in the local language, just because she had never been to that place before.

Vera had not decided exactly where to go and what to do in the city, which seemed to be a featureless bedroom town on a large river.

Strangely, the air smelled of rusty iron. She looked around, wondering where the smell came from.

this week's prompt: iron

  1. nice... a visual (and then other senses) engaging Six! A most difficult task in this format. To draw in the Reader and get them to see (and feel and smell) the world you've created.

  6. This SSS seems like a great beginning to an adventurous experience, maybe more than she was expecting. Nice job creating the scene.

  7. How adventurous! I can easily picture her outing and I love that she hopped a train. There's something about trains - I enjoy riding on them and love to hear their horn blow in the distant.

  8. I like her sense of adventure, and that her journey starts carefree - then she is curious about the smell of rusty iron in the air. Nice pace to all this.
